Farewell at Xiestower in Xuanzhou to Uncle Shuyun the Secretarial
Author: Li Bai
Translator: Yuan Xiang
For those days of yesterday that abandoned me none are to keep,
For those days of today that trouble my mind all too much ado;
We may as well get drunk and in this tower fall into sleep
As winds carrying autumnal geese for ten thousand miles goes
Yours is Penglai style of the Jian’an
And mine that of Younger Xie’s with a
Both are endowed with aspirations and mighty thoughts
That would fly up the blue sky for moonshots.
Yet there’s swifter flow by the sword drawn to cut water
And more sorrow from the cup raised to drown sorrow.
If in this world one cannot fulfill his attempt,
Tomorrow he should go boating with hair unkempt.
